The Great Lakes Historical Society reported on Wednesday that an amateur wreck hunter has located the General Anthony Wayne, a steamship that exploded and sank in Lake Erie in 1850. The wreck sits in about 50 feet of water, approximately 8 miles north of Vermillion, OH. Thomas Kowalczk discovered the wreck of the sidewheel steamer last September, using side-scan sonar and confirmed his finding when he went diving at the site in May. (Click 'Read More'below for photographs of the wreck.)
Kowalczk photographed the wreck, which sits in two sections. Kowalczk and the Cleveland Underwater Explorers plan to conduct a second, formal survey of the site later this summer, when the visibility has improved. The General Anthony Wayne was enroute from Toledo, OH to Buffalo, NY when the accident occurred. Of the 93 persons on board the ship, 38 passengers and crew perished.
