Last week, NOAA celebrated the keel laying for two new vessels being constructed at the VT Halter Shipyard in Moss Point, MS. The Ferdinand R. Hassler is a small waterplane twin hull coastal mapping vessel, designed to map the ocean floor. The Bell M. Shimada is a fisheries survey vessel.
The ships were part of a naming contest held by NOAA for students in
the New England and West Coast regions. Ferdinand Hassler was the
first director of NOAA. Bell Shimada was a marine biologist who studied
Pacific tropical tuna.
