Spain Claims Ownership Of Salvaged Wreck PDF Print E-mail

A US shipwreck recovery firm is under close scrutiny by the Spanish government. In May, Odyssey Marine Exploration, announced the discovery of what it termed to be 'the world's biggest maritime treasure in international waters.'The Spanish government claims the wreck is in Spain's territorial waters and the wreck belongs to the Spanish government. The Spanish authorities have ordered that two vessels belonging to Odyssey Marine Exploration be seized and searched if they attempt to leave their current position off the coast of Gibraltar and enter Spanish waters.

Last week, Spanish media claimed that Odyssey Marine Exploration illegally removed artifacts from the unnamed wreck and shipped them back to the United States with the help of the British Royal Navy. The wreck, code named Black Swan, is reported to have sunk with more than a half-million silver and gold coins aboard. The Spanish government has also filed suit in US Federal Court claiming ownership of the artifacts.
