You older farts hear the word 'farmer'and think of corn and Liberty overalls. But, there is a new use for the word when it is spelled pharmer. A pharmer is someone who uses many doctor perscribed or OTC drugs to get high, or fight depression, or stabilize their mood. Most pharmers can create the same high you get from using any street drug just by doubling, or mixing the doctor prescribed meds. Sometimes, the reletivley safe medicine can be altered by scraping off a hard coating on a pill, so that the whole dose is delivered at once, instead of all day slowly. Many, many people who work in the marine industry have gone to their doctors for prescriptions for various drugs, and very few have reported the usage to the Coast Guard as they are supposed to do. A high dose of the common antidepressant 'Zoloft'can leave a person in a near stuper, and a person taking a sleep aid like Ambian that is woke up to get underway before getting the recomended eight hours of sleep can be in a near dream state at the wheel of your boat. The best part is, the CG, and most of the companies out there are still only testing for the old favorites like pot or cocaine. I thought when that guy crashed the ferry on prescribed meds and killed all those people, it would ignite a shit storm, but I was wronge. The party is for now, still on. I think most folks are just doing what the doctor told them to do, but when that little sticker with the sleepy eyes says 'do not operate machinery'on the side of your pill bottle, they probably mean tug boats too. Yall be careful out there.
